Folio Privacy Policy

In short

Folio is an app for reading and editing PDF and Word files. Your files stay on your device, and we run no server that receives your data.

What stays on your device

• The books and documents you open.
• Your notes, highlights, drawings, sticky notes, bookmarks and reading progress.
• Text recognition (OCR) runs on your device only.

Sync through Google Drive (optional)

If you turn on sync and sign in with Google, the app stores, in its own private folder in your Google Drive (appDataFolder): the files of your books, so they appear on your other devices; one small file per book containing your notes, highlights, bookmarks and the last page you reached; and a list of the books in your library (their names, and a fingerprint of each file used to recognise the same book on your other devices).

• The app requests a single permission: drive.appdata. It cannot see or change any of your other Drive files.
• Book files are uploaded only to this private folder in your own account, and use your Google Drive storage. A book removed from the library is removed from this folder and from your other devices.
• This data lives in your own account; neither the developer nor anyone else can access it.
• Your email address is used only to show the connected account in Settings.
• You can turn sync off at any time in Settings, and delete the app's data from Google Drive under Drive → Settings → Manage apps → Folio → Delete hidden app data.

Folio's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Explain with ChatGPT (optional)

When you select text and tap "Explain with ChatGPT", only the selected text is sent to ChatGPT (chatgpt.com) by OpenAI, under OpenAI's privacy policy. Nothing is sent unless you tap the button.

What we do not do

• No ads, no tracking, no selling or sharing of data.
• No usage analytics.
